A Detailed Guide to PCB Assembly

Circuit boards are an important part of all electronic chips. There are a lot of chip designing and manufacturing companies in the world which depend mostly upon circuit board manufacturing companies since they do not have their own circuit board manufacturing unit. The end product of these companies might be electronic devices or the chips inside it. But as long as they are not supplied with the integral parts, i.e. the circuit boards they cannot manufacture the final product. So a circuit board is what we call as the heart of every electronic product.

When different electronic components are attached to a circuit board, it is called as printed circuit board (PCB). There are different technologies like surface-mount technology, through-hole technology and box-build, electro-mechanical assembly which are responsible to attach electronic components to form PCB assembly.

How Assembly is done

The surface-mount technology and through-hole assembly are mostly used in circuit board manufacturing. Both these methods have their own advantages and disadvantages. The former method consumes less space and less expensive, whereas the latter method takes more space than surface mounting and provides more strength to the board. Through-hole process is more expensive compared to surface mounting.

The components are connected and supported by different conductive pathways, methods, tracks and traces. All these components are cut properly from laminated copper using acid or similar substances. Then the surface mounting starts. It involves making holes in circuit board by drilling and attaching the electronic components through the holes. As soon as the components get inserted in the holes, they are placed on the external pads of the board.

The component leads are fixed to the board mechanically using soft metal molten solder. After getting attached by components the circuit board is called as printed circuit board (PCB) assembly.

The entire assembling of the board and the components uses several techniques. If components are attached in high volume like it’s needed in wire cable assembly or custom cable assemblies, then it is done by bulk wave soldering, machine placement or by using reflow ovens.

Utilities of PCB

The printed circuit boards are being used to connect the electrical elements to several appliances and machinery. All electronic device manufacturers use these circuit boards in the production of electronic devices such as computers, calculators, i-Pods, TVs, video games, consoles and so on. But companies have got to hire professional assemblers from registered and authorized assembly service centers when they produce large electronic devices.

Significance of Board Assembly

Printed circuit boards come in handy when it comes to any electronic devices since no device operates without a printed circuit board. The other advantage of PCB is that it helps upgrade any electronic device without any difficulty.
